Verhaeren, M. A Belgian agent at a trading post in the Congo in the early 1900s. It was Mr. Verhaeren that located and purchased the stuffed ape-princess for Sir Arthur Jermyn. Upon viewing the mummy, Verhaeren mentioned casually the uncanny resemblance of the mummy, though to whom he never said.

Victory, The. A British freighter sunk by the German submarine U-29 on June 18, 1917. The ship was on its way to Liverpool from New York where, at N. Lat. 45º, 16’, W. Long. 28º, 34’, it was torpedoed and destroyed. The crew of U-29 allowed the Victory’s crew to escape in life rafts in order to film the gallantry of the Imperial German Navy. After the cameras were turned off, the life rafts were sunk.

Vermis Mysteriis, De. Book of black arts written by Ludvig Prinn in 1542. Not much known about it except it was published in folio size in German and immediately suppressed by the church. One of the known copies existed for 91 years in an arcane library in the Free-Will Church o f Providence, Rhode Island. After Robert Blake’s death in 1935 to the Haunter of the Dark, a Doctor Dexter removed this and other tomes and added it to his library.

Vigilant. A freighter owned by the Morrison Company of Australia that sailed the south Pacific in the 1920s. It was the Vigilant that discovered the Alert adrift with only Gustaf Johansen alive on board. On March 25th, the Vigilant left port at Valparaiso and was driven south by heavy storms, winds, and giant waves on April 2nd. This coincides with the sinking of R’lyeh. On April 12th, the Vigilant spotted the derelict and brought it to port.
