Zann, Erich
Zath
Zimmer, Seaman

Zann, Erich. German violinist who played evenings in cheap theater operas in an unspecified town in France. Those who listened to his work quickly discovered Zann was a genius. Erich was mute, described as a small, lean, bent person with shabby clothes, blue eyes, grotesque, satyr-like face, and nearly bald head. Zann lived in a garretted room on the sixth floor of a house at the end of Rue d’Auseil. When Zann first moved into the room, he believed no one could hear his music. When he discovered someone had moved into a room on the fifth floor, he offered to have the man moved to a lower floor and to defray the difference in rent.
Zann’s musical prowess was always directed at the window in his room which opened on the area beyond the wall at the end of Rue d’Auseil. His music was challenged by some unseen force beyond the window. An observer caught a glimpse beyond the window during Zann’s playing. He described the view as space and blackness unlimited; unimagined space alive with motion and music, and having no semblance of anything on earth.
Zann died in contest with the entity beyond the window, his wild, howling viol screeching against the force even in his death.

Zimmer, Seaman. Sailor of the Imperial German Navy and crewman aboard the U-29 submarine during World War I. On June 18, 1917, the U-29 sunk the British ship Victory. After destroying the ship and killing the crew, the U-29 submerged and resurfaced at sunset. Clinging to the rail of the ship was a corpse of a sailor, assumed to be a member of the Victory’s crew. Zimmer, along with a sailor named Schmidt, threw the corpse overboard, but not before a bump caused the dead man’s eyes to open and stare mockingly at them.
On June 18th, Seaman Zimmer led a delegation who requested Lt. Cdr. Heinrich, the ship’s captain, to dispose of the ivory carving confiscated after its finding in the pocket of the dead sailor. The request was denied. A week later, Zimmer disappeared, assumed dead by suicide, probably by drowning.
