Submission Guidelines

The NetherReal is a non-profit publication created to offer writers and artists a way to show off their material to the world. As such, no payments, royalties, or any other type of compensation is offered to those who wish to contribute to The NetherReal. The NetherReal is a showcase of sorts, you never know who might be reading your material.

Copyrights for material posted on The NetherReal are the sole responsibility of the author or artist. If you submit material to The NetherReal for posting, you are assuring me that you have all rights to that material. Any rights you need to get to artwork, fiction, non-fiction, or poetry must be obtained by you. While The NetherReal will make every attempt to assure material posted here is original, it can not be held responsible for submissions made by plagiarists and copycats. In other words, STAY HONEST! Any prosecution for copyright infringement based on the posting of material on The NetherReal is the responsibility of the author or artist. The NetherReal will attempt to help as it can by giving information, but will not be held responsible for prosecution.

While The NetherReal will make every attempt to post as much material as possible, things like space available and quality of material will determine who gets posted and who doesn't. From this point on, any material submitted which contain gross mistakes in grammar or spelling will be returned to the submitter without consideration for publication. Between my r/t job and trying to keep this site current, I don't have the time to undertake in-depth editing of material. Don't take offense if this happens to you. If you have problems with grammar, get with a friend and get it fixed (and learn in the process). Remember, grammar checks and spell checkers are not immune to mistakes—two, to, and too are spelled correctly, but which one is the correct one to use?

Submission Guidelines for different departments are listed below. Make sure you follow the guidelines for the department you are submitting to. If you do not, chances of getting posted are very slim. Click on the department below to go to that section's guidelines.

NEW! If you have a submission, go to the appropriate section, read up on the submission guidelines for that piece, and then follow the link to the submission form. As soon as I receive the information you submit, I'll contact you and tell you how to send your material to me.

The Crypt

(storysub@netherreal.de)

NOTE: The Crypt does not accept slasher material for consideration. If you have such material and you wish to publish it on the Internet, you can use one of the many search engines available to find a site which can accommodate you. Another suggestion is to create a site of your own on a service such as Geocities or Tripod. Any slasher material submitted will be deleted and the author will be notified of this policy. (Slasher material is material in which excessive violence not integral to the plot of the story is embedded, or material which is written purely for the splatter shock effect. While some may enjoy this material, this does not fit the concept of this site.)

The Crypt section will post fiction and poetry written about the Cthulhu Mythos. Though I will attempt to post as much as I can, following these guidelines will help get your piece on this site:

  1. Keep pieces under 6,000 words as a rule. If you think your material is exceptionally good and it is over 6,000 words, query first.
  2. I expect to be able to post most pieces with little or no editing. Know the rules of grammar. The biggest turn off to any publisher is not being able to get through a piece with a good theme because of bad English usage.
  3. No gratuitous sex or violence. Sexual scenes should be suggestive, not explicit. Make sure sex scenes and violence is integral to the plot. To figure whether or not this is true, ask yourself, "Would my story or poem fall apart at the seams if I removed this scene?" If the answer is yes, it's integral. If the answer is no, lose it.
  4. Submission is not a guarantee that your piece will get posted. It must be readable, make sense, and enjoyable. If your piece does not get posted, I will make every attempt to email you back with the reason why, along with suggestions, if possible. Pieces not posted will be erased from files at The NetherReal.
  5. All works will be published as they become available and accepted. Just because the Table of Contents hasn't changed doesn't mean your piece isn't posted. I will make every attempt to notify you once the piece is accepted with the URL and the date of posting. Once posted, the life of the posting is dependent on the number of hits your piece receives and other material accepted (in case we need to make room).
  6. You can request the piece be removed by emailing me at editor@netherreal.de. Include your name, email address, and the title of the piece. Once your request is received, the piece will be removed as soon as possible. You must understand, though, that because of my R/T job, I may not be able to get to it for up to 12 days at a time, so be patient.

If you are ready to query for your submission, go to the Submission Query Form now.

The Gallery

(artsub@netherreal.de)

The Gallery offers a place for artists to hang their ware. The main stipulation, again, is that its theme be Cthulhu Mythos related. Before submitting, though, follow these guidelines.

  1. Do not send me your piece until I ask for it. Use the Submission Query Form to let me know about the piece. You'll be requested to submit a thumbnail version of your piece. Create your thumbnail by using any popular paint program, resampling your work to 1" x 1" at 74 dpi, and saving it as a JPG format file with a compression rate of 60. Additional instructions will be provided.
  2. If your work was hand painted or drawn, scan it in using a flatbed scanner and then follow the instructions above.
  3. If your work is accepted (depending on quality and availability of space), I will email you with a request to send me the entire work with additional instructions on how to do it. Pieces not posted will be erased from files at The NetherReal.
  4. Again, do not send in unsolicited works of art.

The Library

(library@netherreal.de)

If you have essays, reviews (books or movies), articles, or anything in general about the Cthulhu Mythos, submit them to The Library. Use the following guidelines when submitting your material:

  2. I expect to be able to post most pieces with little or no editing. Know the rules of grammar. The biggest turn off to any publisher is not being able to get through a piece with a good theme because of bad English usage.

The Moors

(gamesub@netherreal.de)

The Moors carries information and resources for those who enjoy the mythos through games, television, and movies. If you have a game module, rules, or other like item, or you have an article or review on a movie or television show that covers the Cthulhu Mythos or other Lovecraftian subject, send it in. Follow these guidelines:

Games

  1. When submitting your game supplement, make sure it is your own work. If it is a collaboration with another individual, permission will be required from that individual before the piece can be posted.
  2. The original submission/query should only include a summary of the piece, along with the version of the game it targets.
  3. Once the summary is reviewed, you will receive a request for the entire piece to be submitted. When doing so, include all supplemental material (maps, drawings, etc.) in electronic form. Please zip all information using WinZip or some other zip program. If you are using a non-Windows based zip program, contact me at editor@netherreal.de first.
  4. Once accepted and approved by you for release, the supplement will be posted on the Moors and will remain there until either room is required for other pieces (not likely) or you request its removal. The NetherReal reserves the right to remove any material without notice for any reason, given or not given.

The Grotto

(grotto@netherreal.de)

The Grotto publishes all material that falls under the realm of H.P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos but does not fall under one of the categories listed above. If you have such a piece and you want to see if it fits, email me at editor@netherreal.de and we'll talk about it.

Links To The Gate

(links@netherreal.de)

Links To The Gate will carry links to other sites on the Internet that deal with H.P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos. If you have one you want posted, or you've been to one that was really good, send them in. Follow these guidelines:

  1. First and foremost, the link must have something to do with fictional material or artwork of the Cthulhu Mythos, or the life and influences of H.P. Lovecraft.
  2. Use the Links Submission Form to let me know about the link. I will go to that site as soon as I can and rate it according to ease of use, information value, aesthetics, and availability.
  3. The link will stay on the site as long as it is active. A link that fails to respond after one week of trying will be dropped from this site.
